Library Research Tips

Finding Journal Articles

The following databases are the ones I have found most useful in looking for biological journal articles. Some of these databases may only be accessible from computers in the "creighton.edu" domain.

Web of Science covers almost all biological journals back to 1992. It also has the unique advantage of showing all papers cited by each article, and allowing you to find all later articles that cite an article. In other words, once you locate a paper of interest, you can easily search both backwards and forwards in the citation process. Links are provided to full text, but articles not publically available are available only for a fee - make sure you check Creighton’s electronic journal listing separately.

Medline and PubMed cover medical and related journals, going back to 1950. Journals with a physiological emphasis are usually indexed, but journals with a more ecological bent are not. Links are provided to full text when available.

BasicBIOSIS covers the major journals in most areas of biology, going back five years. Links are provided to full text available through Creighton.

ScienceDirect covers a sizable number of biological journals. Full text of some articles is available on-site.

JSTOR provides access to slightly older (2+ years) volumes of mostly ecology journals. Full text of articles is available on-site.

BioOne includes journals from a number of smaller publishers. Full text of recent articles is available on-site.

Google Scholar is the special version of Google designed for finding academic papers. The downside of Google Scholar relative to the databases above is that it’s not quite as easy to fine-tune searches, and searches will only find what's been posted on the web by someone else. The advantage is that searches may cover broader times than our databases, and may also turn up full-text versions of articles in out-of-the-way places.

See http://reinert.creighton.edu/articles/databases/bysubject/science.htm for a complete list of online science databases. You might also want to check out the Biology Subject Guide put together by the librarians.

Finding Periodicals and Texts

The Creighton Libraries Information Catalog will not help you find journal articles directly. What it can do is tell you where to find the journals themselves, including information on electronic access when available. In addition, the catalog is useful for finding entire books on a particular topic.

Sample review articles:

These are a few review articles I’ve encountered recently that have topics that would be suitable for Environmental Physiology term papers. These typically contain much more coverage than I would expect from a student paper.
